Your books. In their places.
Privacy policy
A personal library on your device, with optional online catalog and cover searches.
Data on your device
Books, notes, cover photos, storage locations and lending history are saved on the device. You enter borrowers’ names yourself; the app does not read your contacts. Family sharing through iCloud is optional.
The app contains no ads, usage analytics or tracking. It has no built-in mechanism for sending your library to the developer.
Family sharing
When you enable family sharing, your entire library, including notes, borrowers’ names, dates, locations and cover photos, is uploaded to the owner’s private CloudKit database and uses their iCloud storage. Selected participants receive viewing or editing access.
Apple handles sign-in and invitations through iCloud. Bookreign does not ask for an email address or password to register. A technical iCloud account identifier is stored on the device to prevent sending changes from a different account.
Revoking access does not remove copies participants have already downloaded or exported. The in-app copy becomes available only for reading, export or deletion. Deleting the app does not delete the shared library from iCloud; cloud data can be managed in iCloud storage settings.
Camera and photos
The camera is used to scan barcodes and photograph covers. The app receives only the images you select from your photo library. Apple Vision recognizes text on the device; photos are not uploaded for recognition. Recognized ISBNs or text may be sent to a catalog when you search.
Catalog searches
Open Library receives your ISBN or search query. ISBN lookups may also send the query to an additional book catalog. Searching for another cover sends an ISBN, title or author to a catalog. These services also receive technical connection data, such as your IP address.
Covers and external sites
Linked covers are loaded from image hosts, including covers.openlibrary.org and sites returned by a catalog. Image search opens Google with your query. Importing an HTTPS image URL requests the selected site directly and may follow redirects. These sites receive the request and technical connection data.
Selected photos and confirmed alternative covers are saved locally. Covers stored only as links may be downloaded when a book is displayed.
Backups and deletion
You choose where to save a JSON backup or CSV file using Files. Backups may contain notes, borrowers’ names and photos. If you select cloud storage, its provider will handle the file. The queue of ISBNs not yet added to the library is not included in the JSON backup.
Data stays on the device until you delete it in the app or delete the app itself. Exported files and system backups are managed separately. Offloading the app while keeping its data does not delete the library. Restoring a JSON backup replaces the current library after confirmation.
Your choices
Manual entry and your saved library work without internet access. You can change camera permission in iOS Settings. External catalogs, websites and file services handle requests under their own policies; the app does not determine their data retention periods.
The library uses local SQLite storage. Interface settings and the pending scanning queue are also stored locally. Device backups may contain app data, depending on your iOS and backup-provider settings. Manage those backups separately.
External service policies
These links explain the providers’ own practices. They do not establish how long an individual catalog or image request is retained.
