Your books. In their places.

Practical help for adding books, organizing shelves and keeping your library safe.

Updated 14 October 2026 · Includes version 1.1.0

Add your first book

In Books, tap Add book to open the scanner. Check the found edition and cover, then confirm. Use Other ways for manual entry, title or author search, or text recognition from a cover photo. Camera scanning needs a physical device and camera permission.

A book is not found

Check the ISBN digits and try again with a connection. A catalog may not contain your edition. Enter the details manually, or keep the ISBN in the scanning queue and complete it later. Review automatically found details before saving.

Find and organize your books

Use Books in list or grid view and narrow the visible books with search and filters. Topics lets you combine author and genre filters. Places organizes your copies by storage location and shelf. Multiple copies of the same edition can have different places.

Track a loan

Open a book and record the borrower and lending date, with an optional due date. In Places, open On loan to mark a return. The app keeps lending history. Due dates do not create reminder notifications.

Change a cover

Choose another cover in the book details. Use a catalog result, selected photo, the camera or a direct HTTPS image URL. Check the preview before confirming. Imported online images must be no larger than 12 MiB. A failed or cancelled import keeps the previous cover.

Back up or move to another device

In Settings, choose Save a backup and select a location in Files. Transfer the JSON file to the other device and choose Restore from a backup. Restore is available for a local library and replaces it after confirmation. Shared libraries can be exported, but cannot be replaced by a backup. Save its current library first. JSON contains stored cover photos and lending history, but not the pending scanning queue or interface settings. CSV is for spreadsheet export and cannot be restored.

Use the app offline

For a local library, manual entry, editing, locations and lending records work without internet access. Shared editing after an app restart first needs online iCloud account verification. Online catalog search and remotely hosted cover images need a connection. Selected photos and explicitly imported covers are saved locally.

Change language, theme or camera access

Choose Ukrainian, Russian or English and a light, dark or system theme in Settings. Book titles, authors and your place names are not translated. System pickers follow iOS language settings. Change camera permission in iOS Settings.

Undo or protect your data

Undo last change is available in Settings during the current session for a local library. It is disabled for a shared library. Make backups regularly and before restoring another file. Deleting the app removes its local library; offloading it keeps data. Copies saved to Files and system backups must be managed separately.

Share with your family (from version 1.1.0)

Open Settings → Family library and enable sharing. The entire library, including notes, saved covers and loan history, is shared through iCloud. Invite people with Apple’s sharing window and choose viewing or editing access. Everyone needs iCloud on their device; no separate Bookreign registration is required. A joining member can add their local books, or export them to Files before replacing the local library. If an upload fails, the original local library remains available and you can retry. When the same field is changed on multiple devices, the latest edit wins.

Cloud storage uses the owner’s iCloud quota. After restarting the app, shared editing waits until the original iCloud account is verified online. Reading and exporting remain available. Temporary network failures keep pending edits on the device. When sharing ends, downloaded or exported participant copies may remain. Deleting the app does not delete the owner’s iCloud data; manage sharing before uninstalling.
